Zanzibar is the perfect place to slow down after a Tanzania safari, but the island offers much more than beach days. Here are the best activities to add to your Zanzibar stay.

Best Zanzibar Activities After Safari

Zanzibar is often added at the end of a Tanzania safari for one simple reason: after early game drives, dusty roads, and full days in the bush, the island gives you space to slow down.

But Zanzibar is not only a beach ending. It is history, food, snorkeling, forest walks, sandbanks, dhow boats, old streets, and warm Indian Ocean evenings. If you plan it well, a few days on the island can feel like a real second chapter of the trip, not just somewhere to rest before flying home.

Here are the Zanzibar activities we recommend most often for travellers combining safari and beach.

1. Stone Town

Stone Town waterfront in Zanzibar at sunset with palm trees and historic buildings

Stone Town is the cultural heart of Zanzibar and the best place to understand the island beyond the beaches. The old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most atmospheric places on the Swahili coast. Its narrow streets, carved doors, seafront, markets, and old buildings reflect centuries of African, Arab, Indian, and European influence. We usually recommend doing Stone Town with a guide rather than just walking around alone. The streets are interesting by themselves, but the stories behind them are what make the visit worthwhile.

Good for:
– First-time Zanzibar visitors
– History and culture
– Food, markets, and local life
– A half-day before or after a beach stay

Sharubu tip:
Plan Stone Town near the start or end of your Zanzibar stay, especially if your flight arrives or leaves from Zanzibar airport. It pairs well with Prison Island or a sunset dinner on the waterfront.

2. Prison Island

Giant Aldabra tortoise on Prison Island near Stone Town Zanzibar

Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island, is a short boat ride from Stone Town. It is best known for its giant Aldabra tortoises and its historical buildings. This is an easy half-day activity, especially if you are staying in or near Stone Town. It is not the quietest or most hidden experience on the island, but for families and first-time visitors it can still be a memorable stop.

Good for:
– Families
– Short boat trips
– Giant tortoises
– Combining with Stone Town or Nakupenda

Sharubu tip:
Go earlier in the day when it is cooler. If you want a fuller day out, combine Prison Island with Nakupenda Sandbank instead of doing it alone.

3. Nakupenda Sandbank

Nakupenda Sandbank in Zanzibar with white sand and turquoise water

Nakupenda is one of the classic Zanzibar images: bright white sand, shallow turquoise water, and open sky. It is simple, but that is exactly the point. You go by boat, spend time swimming, walking on the sandbank, relaxing, and often having a fresh seafood lunch. When the tide is right, it feels like standing in the middle of the ocean.

Good for:
– Couples
– Families
– Beach photos
– A relaxed day from Stone Town
– Combining with Prison Island

Sharubu tip:
Timing matters because the sandbank changes with the tide. We arrange it with local guides who know when to go, so you are not arriving when the best part is already disappearing.

4. Mnemba Snorkeling

Clear blue water near Mnemba Island in Zanzibar for snorkeling

Mnemba is one of Zanzibar’s most popular snorkeling areas. The water can be beautifully clear, with coral, tropical fish, and a proper Indian Ocean feeling. It is important to understand that most tours go near Mnemba, not onto the private island itself. The experience is about the water, not landing on the island.

Good for:
– Snorkeling
– Ocean lovers
– Active beach days
– Travellers staying in the north or northeast

Sharubu tip:
Choose this when the sea conditions are good. If you are not confident in the water, tell us in advance so we can match you with the right boat, guide, and pace.

5. Blue Safari

Traditional dhow boat and beach scenery during a Blue Safari in Zanzibar

Blue Safari is one of the best full-day ocean experiences in Zanzibar. Expect a dhow boat, swimming, snorkeling, sandbanks, lagoons, and often a fresh seafood lunch. It is a good choice if you want a full day out rather than a quick activity. The day feels relaxed, but still varied enough that it works well for couples, families, and small groups.

Good for:
– Full-day ocean trip
– Dhow boat experience
– Snorkeling and swimming
– Seafood lunch
– Safari and beach combination itineraries

Sharubu tip:
Use Blue Safari as one of your main Zanzibar activity days. Then keep the next day slower, with beach time or a sunset cruise.

6. Jozani Forest

Forest path in Jozani Forest Zanzibar, home of the Zanzibar red colobus monkey

Jozani Forest is the best-known nature stop on Zanzibar. It is especially famous for the Zanzibar red colobus monkey, an endangered species found only in Zanzibar. The forest gives a completely different feeling from the coast. You walk through shaded paths, mangroves, and green forest, which makes it a useful break from beach and boat activities.

Good for:
– Nature
– Families
– Wildlife beyond safari
– A half-day from the east coast

Sharubu tip:
This is a nice activity if you are staying around Paje, Jambiani, or the east coast. It can also be combined with Kuza Cave or a beach lunch.

7. Turtles Aquarium

Sea turtle swimming in a natural aquarium in Zanzibar

Zanzibar has turtle aquarium experiences, especially in the north. Many travellers are drawn to them because they offer close contact with sea turtles. We treat this one carefully. Some turtle experiences are more responsible than others, so we prefer checking the current situation before recommending a specific stop. If animal welfare matters to you, tell us. We will help you choose the most respectful option available.

Good for:
– Travellers who specifically want to see turtles
– North coast stays
– Short activity days

Sharubu tip:
Do not choose this only because it is popular online. Choose it only if the setup feels responsible and fits your values.

8. Sunset Cruise

Sunset cruise in Zanzibar with warm evening light over the Indian Ocean

A sunset cruise is one of the easiest ways to end a Zanzibar day well. It does not need to be complicated: a boat, warm evening light, ocean breeze, and the sun dropping over the water. After several active days, this is exactly the kind of simple experience that people remember.

Good for:
– Couples
– Honeymoons
– Families
– Relaxed evenings
– Last night in Zanzibar

Sharubu tip:
Book this toward the end of your stay. It works especially well after a beach day, when you do not want another full excursion.

9. Kendwa Beach

Kendwa Beach in Zanzibar with white sand and clear blue ocean

Kendwa is one of Zanzibar’s best-known beach areas, and for good reason. The sand is soft, the water is clear, and the beach works well for travellers who want easy swimming and a more lively atmosphere than some quieter parts of the island. It is a strong choice after safari because it gives you comfort, good beach access, restaurants, and a relaxed but social feeling.

Good for:
– Easy beach days
– Couples and families
– Swimming
– Travellers who want some atmosphere

Sharubu tip:
Choose Kendwa or nearby Nungwi if you want a beach stay with more life around you. Choose quieter east-coast areas if you want a slower, more peaceful ending.

10. Kuza Cave

Kuza Cave in Zanzibar with natural rock walls and clear water

Kuza Cave is a smaller, more local-style activity, often combined with a stay around Jambiani or the southeast coast. The main draw is the natural cave pool, where you can swim in clear freshwater surrounded by rock.

It is not a full-day highlight like Blue Safari, but it can be a good add-on when you are already in the area.

Good for:
– Short activity stop
– East coast stays
– Swimming
– Combining with Jozani or Jambiani

Sharubu tip:
Do Kuza Cave as part of an easy half-day, not as the main reason for crossing the island.

How Many Zanzibar Activities Should You Plan?

For most travellers, the best Zanzibar stay has a balance of activities and slow days.

If you have 3 nights in Zanzibar:
– Choose one main activity, such as Stone Town plus Nakupenda, or Mnemba snorkeling.
– Keep at least one proper beach day.

If you have 4 to 5 nights:
– Add one ocean day, such as Blue Safari or Mnemba.
– Add one culture or nature day, such as Stone Town or Jozani.
– Keep time free for the beach.

If you have 6 to 7 nights:
– You can combine Stone Town, a sandbank, snorkeling, Jozani, and a sunset cruise without making the trip feel rushed.

The biggest mistake is trying to do everything. Zanzibar is best when the plan has space in it.

## Best Zanzibar Activities by Traveller Type

Combining Zanzibar With a Tanzania Safari

Zanzibar works especially well after a northern Tanzania safari.

A common route is:

Arusha → Tarangire → Ngorongoro → Serengeti → Zanzibar

After several days of wildlife, early starts, and moving between parks, Zanzibar gives the trip a softer finish. You can fly from the safari circuit to Zanzibar, spend a few nights by the beach, and add activities depending on your pace.

At Sharubu, we build the safari and Zanzibar part together. That means we do not just add a random beach hotel at the end. We look at your travel dates, budget, flight route, beach style, and the kind of activities you actually want.

Some travellers want a lively beach and several excursions. Others want a quiet hotel, one sandbank trip, and nothing else. Both can be right.
